Pet Collar, Leash and Harness Guide

Dog collars, leashes, and harnesses may not be the most glamorous accessories in the canine world, they get soggy, dirty, and on occasion, stand in as a chew toy. But an exceptional collar and leash might be the two most important purchases you ever make for your pet.

Sub-par parts and small design can spell immediate danger to your loved companion's well-being. Whether you're near a bustling intersection or buried in the forests, your pet is only one material failure away from losing you.

Especially in an unknown or highly stimulating situation, even a well-trained pet can become confused if separated from you. A dependable pet collar and leash are essential if you're going to enjoy a lighthearted outing with your canine companion.

Collar vs. Harness: Which Is Better?

A collar is an essential piece of safety gear for our faithful companions, but is a harness a better choice for your dog? If your pooch is a puller or a jumper, a front-clip harness may provide greater control and minimize these behaviors.

Small-skulled dogs or breeds with a thick neck are often masters at slipping out of a collar - and thus may be less likely to flee from a securely fitted harness.

Some pets will not adjust to a harness even after a strait-laced introduction to it, and all-day wear can cause pain for the sensitive canine. For safety - and to facilitate a speedy return if your furry friend goes missing - a collar with identification is imperative, even if you use a harness for walks.

Our personalized pet id tags are an excellent way to make sure your pet can find its way home if you become separated. With your contact information on the id tag, you're just one phone call away from a joyful reunion.

How to Fit Your Dog for a Harness or Collar

Major League Pets collars come in sizes that will fit any cat, dog, kitten, or puppy to a tee. Our different harness types provide comprehensive support and control in any situation.

Collar size depends on one measurement: the circumference of the neck where the collar should sit. If your pet falls between two sizes, go one size up for a better fit. Two fingers should fit between your pet's collar and neck.

The circumference most often defines harness size at the fullest part of the upper chest. But may also require taking the sizing around the broad neck as well as the weight of the pet. The pets weight should never be the only factor in choosing a dog harness, as the relationship between mass and chest size may differ considerably between breeds.

Adjust the straps for a secure fit - ensure your dog cannot slip-free, and that the harness does not move from side to side. Properly fitted harness should not pinch or cause a rash or worse infection. As with collars, two fingers should go between the harness straps and your pet's body.

What Is a Martingale Collar?

A flat strap usually with two loops that tighten in response to tugging made of nylon — often favored for training and benefits dogs who slip out of traditional collars. A martingale is safe and effective for walking your pet, but is not intended for full-time wear or tying out your pet.

How Do You Clean Collars and Leashes?

Bath your pet, scrub the collar. Soak the pet collar in a bowl of hot water and shampoo, use a toothbrush or other soft brush to clean out the nooks where the dirt is, and then hang the collar to dry. Leashes and harnesses may be washed in the same way, as needed.

Leather collars require gentler care - rather than soaking the collar, use a toothbrush dipped in a cleaning solution and gently brush away dirt. Rinse, dry off, and hang the leather collar until it is dry, not in the sun, this may cause damage to the leather.

You can machine wash leashes, nylon collars, and harnesses in cold water, on the gentle cycle. Make sure to check the tags to verify washing instructions. Secure the pet's leash inside a sack to avoid tangling and destroying the inside of your machine, and hang them to dry when done.

You'll find an extraordinary array of dog collar and leash styles in our collection. Choose a design that satisfies your feelings and fits your pet's personality. If you're looking for the best pet collar or leash for your dog or cat, your search is over.

A flat collar is the most common style and is the perfect selection for everyday use — other names such as a quick release, side release, or standard collar. Standard flat collars are the safest type for your dog to wear daily with their personalized id tag.

How to Measure For A Dog Collar

Measure Neck size for a collar to be safe, function appropriately, and looks its best; it needs to fit correctly.

Measuring Option #1: Using a seamstress tape (soft tape) measure around your dog's neck where their collar sits naturally. Pull the tape until it is tight but not crushing. Compare this measurement to your pet's current collar to verify accuracy. Record your size.

Measuring Option #2: Use a piece of yarn or string and measure around your dog's neck using the instructions above. Take the line and lay it flat on a smooth surface and use a ruler or tape measure to obtain the measurement.

Choosing the Precise Size and Width Dog Collar

Use your dog's measurements to decide the appropriate size of collar for your dog when ordering your collar. For example, if your dog's neck measurement were 13," you would buy a small 11-15" collar as 13 inches falls between 11 and 15 inches.

Generally speaking, you would select a smaller diameter for a smaller dog and thicker width for larger dogs. A full collar will spread the pressure across a larger area of your pooch's neck, making it more comfortable. There is no right or wrong but think small, medium, and large. Energetic dogs, heavy pullers, or dogs are bordering on the next size up we may want to select a full collar.

Adjusting Your Dog Collar

All collars need to be adjusted appropriately to function and fit correctly. Flat dog collars should be snug but never tight. When the new collar is on your pet, you should be easily able to slide two fingers under the collar. Wearing a pet collar that is too loose can allow it to be caught on other dogs when playing or objects. Supervision should always be used during dogs to represent or remove the collar altogether.

See our sizing guide on each product description to learn how to measure your dog for their perfect fit.

Always inspect your pet's collar for damage before use, including torn materials and worn buckles.
